Mr. Francis A. "Frank" Solla, 80, of Freeport, passed away at 8:45 p.m., Monday, August 9th, 2010 while in the company of family members at the Armstrong Co. Memorial Hospital.

Francis was born in Freeport on August 16, 1929, the son of the late Francesco "Frank" and Liberata (Perlini) Solla. He has lived in Freeport his entire life. He is a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church Freeport, PA 16229.

Mr. Solla is a graduate of Freeport High School, New Kensington Commercial School, and the Mann Institute for Radio Broadcasting and Commercial Writing. Frank also graduated from the Allegheny County Police Academy

A veteran of World War II, he was recalled back to actie duty in the Korean Conflict and served in the Pacific, Philippines, Japan, China and Korea where he was a decorated solider and a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal.

During his career, he worked for the A&P Tea Company for 20 years. He worked as a representative for the Metropolitan Life Ins. Co. He was a police office for Freeport Police Dept. for 10 years and was also an officer for the South Buffalo Twp. Police Dept. for over 15 years. He retired as Chief for South Buffalo Twp. in 1990. Frank is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 39. He enjoyed traveling by train, watching TV and spending time with his family.


He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dolores A. (Olszewski) Solla. His 3 children: Daniel (Janice) Solla of Ambler, PA; Sharon A. (Bruce) Sherrieb of Freeport and Timothy M. (Laura) Solla of Freeport. His sister; Clara Solla of Harrisville, PA. Frank is also survived by his six-grandchildren; Shannon, Brandon and Brady Sherrieb. Shelby Solla, Steven and Michelle Solla.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Albert A. Solla.

Family and friends are being received on Thursday August 12th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.. at Redmond Funeral Home Inc. 524 High St. Freeport. A Parish Wake Service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Thursday evening in the funeral home.

A parting prayer service will be held in the funeral home at 9:30 am that will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Freeport, PA, at 10:00 am on Friday, August 13th, with Father Edward Volz officiating.

Burial will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery Freeport, PA.
