Carol M. Smith, 78, of Buffalo Twp. passed away on Friday, December 8th, peacefully, at West Haven Nursing Home in Washington Twp. Carol was born in Sarver on May 7, 1939. She was the daughter of the late Mildred I. (Schroeder) and Carl W. Spencer. She was the widow of William F. Smith who passed in 2007. Carol had worked for many years at Moonlight Mushrooms in Winfield Twp. She worked as a picker, packer, loader and fork truck operator. After the closing of the mushroom mine, Carol went to work for Fair Winds Manor as a certified nurses aid. She was also the dog warden for Buffalo Twp. Carol loved to crochet and had made well over 100 afghans. She was an avid hunter, enjoyed flowers, gardening and flea markets. She loved to spend time with her family and her pets too. Carol is survived by her daughter, Barbara Skillen, of New Kensington. Three sons; Barry & Cindy Smith, of Cabot; Kenneth & Kimberly Smith, of Buffalo Twp.; Ronald & Judy Smith, of Lower Burrell and 11 grand & 17 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Larry & Jane Spencer, of New Kensington. Three sisters, Donna & Ted Cousins, of Jefferson Twp.; Marilyn Pitkivitch & Dan Powell, of Saxonburg; Brenda & Bill Carbaugh, of Marianville, PA. In addition to her parents and husband, Carol is preceded by her son in law, Charles Skillen and her step grandson, Gregory Picone. Family and friends will be received on Monday, December 11th from 2-4 & 6-8 pm in the Redmond Funeral Home Inc. 524 High St. in Freeport. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home following the visitation on Monday at 8 pm with Rev. Jeff Youell officiating. A private family burial will be held in the Sarverville Cemetery in Sarver, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an animal charity of choice in Carol's memory.
