Our History

On April 1, 1968, Richard L. Redmond purchased The John R. Cherry Funeral Home in Freeport, Pennsylvania. He operated the business as “The Richard L. Redmond Funeral Home, Successor to John R. Cherry” according to Pennsylvania state regulations. After five years the business name became “The Richard L. Redmond Funeral Home and continued to operated under this name as a sole proprietorship until July 1, 1997. In 1997, the funeral home name changed once again when the organization incorporated under Pennsylvania law. The funeral home now does business as “The Redmond Funeral Home, Inc.”

After attending Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania for two years, Ryan Redmond, Richard’s younger son, decided to work in the funeral business and returned to Freeport. He completed his required college hours at IUP and then attended The Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science from which he graduated in September of 1994. He served his apprenticeship with his father from the fall of 1994 until the spring of 1996. He passed his Pennsylvania State Board exam and received his license in March of 1996. He began to work full-time as a funeral director and in 2005 after his father’s retirement; he assumed the leadership of the firm.
