Melvin E. "Merk" Erb, 92, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 peacefully at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot. Merk was a lifelong resident of Freeport. He was born in Freeport on August 20, 1928, a son of the late Carrie Belle (Elder) and George H. Erb, Sr. Merk was the was the widower of Lois Jane (Ward) Erb who passed in 2015. He served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant during the Korean War. When the War was over, Merk came back to Freeport and took a job with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He worked as a car repairman for 42 years, retiring in 1988. Merk was a lifetime member of the Freeport Vol. Fire Dept., member and past master of Armstrong Lodge # 239 in Freeport and a member of the Freeport V.F.W. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, traveling and spending time with his family. Merk is survived by his daughter, Pamela & Bob Schreckengost, of Freeport. His grandchildren, Tonya Blondeaux & Doug Lang of Allison Park, Rob & Christina Schreckengost of Freeport. Great grandchildren, David & Alyssa Blondeaux, Makayla & Kendyll Schreckengost, and a great, great granddaughter, Sofia Santillo. Preceded in death by his parents, wife and his brothers, Richard M. Erb and George H. Erb, Jr. Family and friends will be received on Friday, June 4th from 4-7 pm in the Redmond Funeral Home Inc. 524 High St in Freeport, PA. At the family's request, funeral services will be private and he will be buried at Greenwood Memorial Park in Lower Burrell, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to; Freeport Vol. Fire Dept., Station #70 400 Market Street Freeport, PA 16229 or Shriners Hospitals for Children 1645 West 8th St., Erie, PA 16505. Praying you you Pam and your entire family. Your Dad was a very nice person. Have missed him a lot since he decided to move to Concordia. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by many.
