Betty Jean Wilson was born in Vandergrift, PA on March 19, 1931 and was a faithful servant of God, her church, her community and her family her whole life. She graduated from West Penn Hospital School of Nursing in 1952 and married her lifetime teammate, Dr. Richard Wilson, in 1953. She worked as a scrub nurse at West Penn until shortly before the birth of her first child in 1957. Years later she worked at Harmarville Rehabilitation Center to help support the family during the difficult time of Dr. Wilson’s diagnosis and recovery from leukemia.
Mrs. Wilson’s contributions to the community of Freeport and the surrounding areas were many. She was the recipient of the Clara Barton award in honor of her volunteer service to the Red Cross in organizing blood drives for 34 years. She was in charge of Meals on Wheels in Freeport for 15 years. She was a church volunteer, and always willing to go the extra mile to help others and visit the sick. In an article in Triblive in 2010, Mrs. Wilson was described as the “Mother Teresa of Freeport." Everybody who's sick, I'll go to visit them" said Rev. Edd Myers, pastor at Freeport United Methodist Church." And she's already there or has been there." In his 33 years as a pastor, Myers said, he's never met a parishioner so involved, so dedicated and so willing to work.
During their lives the Wilsons were residents of Freeport, Sarver, Natrona Heights, and Longwood Retirement Community in Oakmont. Mrs. Wilson and her husband also traveled to all seven continents and went on several mission trips. They raised four children and have enjoyed sharing in the lives of 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was the mother of David Wilson (Linda) of Georgia, Bruce Wilson (Tracey) of Massachusetts, Barb Mrozek(John), of Pittsburgh and Brenda Wilson of Natrona Heights. She was the grandmother of Nick Wilson(Caroline), Jenn Mrozek(Greg), Blake Wilson(Brianna), Glen Wilson(Lyndsey), Leanna Schneider (Stephen), and the great grandma of Jack, Oliver, Atticus, Ansel, Arbor, Amelia, Rory, Reed, Riley, Wyatt, Kayla, and Elizabeth! She is also survived by her sister Winnifred Ednie.
Family and friends will be received from 2 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 4 p.m. in the Redmond Funeral Home, Inc. 524 High St Freeport with Pastor Diane Randolph officiating.
