Charles Early Obituary

Charles W. Early, 102 of South Buffalo Twp. passed away on Feb. 23, 2024. Born on March 21, 1921, in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late William James Early and Myrtle Mae (Smith) Early. Charles, or “Bud” as he was known by most, was drafted in 1942 and proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the George Patton 3rd Army, the 80th Infantry Division, and the 905th Field Artillery Battalion, Battery C as a Tech. Sgt. he was a radioman / forward observer and later acting Sgt. Major at Battery Headquarters. For his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Certificate of Merit, and the French award the Croix de Gierre. Upon being discharged in 1945, Bud continued working as a Mechanical Craft Maintenance Scheduler at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation in Brackenridge, PA. He retired from Allegheny Ludlum after 42 years. He was a member of Slate Lick United Presbyterian Church where he had served as an Elder. Some of his other many roles included School Board Director and South Buffalo Township Auditor. One of Bud’s many hobbies involved travel. He visited six of the seven continents, enjoyed many cruises including ones on the Nile River, the Amazon River, and the Panama Canal, explored places in the Middle and Far East, a trip down under and traversed Europe while retracing some of his WWII locations, as well as having traveled all over the United States. Bud also loved flying his own airplane, being a ham radio operator, working in his garden and riding his lawn tractor to mow the grass. He was a member of Freeport Kiwanis Club, Experimental Aircraft Association, Pollock Masonic Lodge #502, Valley of Pittsburgh Scottish Rite, Syria Shrine, VFW and American Legion. Surviving are his wife, Alma (Hockman-Dougherty) Early, whom he married May 19, 2006, and his children Darrell (Deb) Early, Elaine (Alan) Larson, Roger Early, Roy (Vida Kaniecki) Early, Martha Mae (Ian) Wiedersheim, daughter-in-law Sylvia Early, Sherwin (Debbie) Dougherty, Debra (Tim) Smith, Terri (Bill) Huth, Kelly (Jim) Coller, and son-in-law Jamie Watterson; 22 Grandchildren; 33 Great-Grandchildren; and 1 Great-Great Granddaughter. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 56 years Marcella Early, his son Charles E. Early, his daughter-in-law Nancy Early, and daughters Kim Watterson and Ketty Dougherty. Family and friends will be received on Sunday March 3rd from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at the Redmond Funeral Home Inc., 524 High St. in Freeport. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at the Slate Lick Presbyterian Church 106 Brown Rd., Freeport. Interment will follow in the Slate Lick Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to Slate Lick United Presbyterian Church.
