Dr. Charles K. Edge, 84, of Sarver, PA, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Concordia Lutheran Ministries, in Cabot. Chuck was born in Pittsburgh, PA on May 9, 1939, a son of the late Lilly M. (Key) and Charles B. Edge. He was employed as a Research Scientist at PPG Industries for 36 years, retiring in 2000. Dr. Edge received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and his M.S. and Ph. D in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois. He spent his career in various aspects of glass research, specializing in studies relating to float glass technology. Dr. Edge authored numerous patents and publications throughout his career. He was a member of the American Ceramic Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the American Physical Society. Dr. Edge was a recipient of the PPG President's Award for technical excellence, a member of the PPG Technical Collegium, and was elected a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society in 2003. Chuck was involved in the community as a member of the Freeport Area School Board, Freeport Area Little League, and active in his church. Chuck loved baseball, especially the Pittsburgh Pirates, classical music, weird crossword puzzles and reading. Chuck is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia (Coll) Edge. Sons, Brendan C. (Kathy) Edge, of Yadkinville, NC; Christian K. (Stacey Lindsay) Edge, of San Francisco, CA and his daughter, Regan (David) Cordier, of Freeport, PA. Grandchildren, Connor Edge, Delaney Edge, McKenna Cordier & fiancée, Ben Oddy, Bryn Cordier and Sebastian Cordier. His sister, Carol Edge Campbell, of Middlebury, VT and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received on Friday January 19th from 6-9 pm in the Redmond Funeral Home Inc., 524 High St. in Freeport. Everyone is invited to gather for a Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday, January 20th at St. Francis of Assisi Parish- St. Joseph in Cabot, PA. Burial will be held in St. Mary of the Assumption Cemetery, in Herman PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Edge Scholarship, Freeport Area School District Foundation PO Box 189 Freeport, PA 16229 or to the Freeport Area Library Association 428 Market Street.
