Donald R. Spohn

Donald R. Spohn, 99, of S. Buffalo Twp. passed away peacefully, Monday, September 8, 2025, at his residence. Donald was born in Sarver, on October 27, 1925, a son of the late Willavene (Frain) and Homer Spohn. He graduated from Freeport High School and then went on to proudly serve his country in the US Army during WWII where he was deployed in Okinawa, Japan. He was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeport. Don had many occupations throughout his lifetime, but was most proud of being a farmer. He said that the secret to 99 years was “lots of fresh air and hard work.” Don loved eating the fruits of his labor, and using the farm to host square dances, children’s hayrides, and picnics with family and friends. He enjoyed reading, gardening, watching football, woodworking, and traveling- especially during the winter months when he traveled to Florida with dear friends. His life will be remembered by his positive outlook, his sense of humor and his ability to always share a smile or a joke with those he loved. Donald is survived by his wife, Marie I. (Strobel) Spohn, two daughters, Barbara Beale, of S. Buffalo Twp. and Chelle (Don) Hogg, of S. Buffalo Twp.; two stepdaughters, Brenda (David) Ritterpusch and Dawn (Doug) Paulsen. Don is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Jodi (Cesar) Martinez of Colorado, John (Melody) Schwab of Darlington, Adam (Lindsay) Schwab of Pittsburgh, and Lindsay (Dick) Fleeger of Worthington. Don is also survived by 4 great grandchildren- Natalie, Matt, Darby and Wheeler. In addition, he was blessed with 3 step grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jane (Vorp) Spohn who died in 1999, son in law, Ed Beale and half brother Robert Young. A private family graveside service was held in Greenwood Memorial Park in Lower Burrell.
