James D. Smith, 91, of South Buffalo Twp., passed away Saturday, November 5th, at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot. Jim was born in Natrona Heights, on October 5, 1931, a son of the late Ida Myrtle (Brashear) and William G. Smith. He was the widower of Melva B. (Miller) Smith, who passed away in 2014. He worked for T.W. Phillips for 34 years. Jim was a member of the Slate Lick United Presbyterian Church in Freeport, where he was a church elder, trustee, deacon and member of the choir. He was also a Cub Scout Pack Cubmaster. He was instrumental in organizing the South Buffalo Little League and coached Little League teams in both the South Buffalo and Freeport leagues. Jim also enjoyed being camp host at the Shenango Campground.
Jim is survived by four sons, Donald E. (Stacy) Smith, of N. Buffalo Twp., Randy W. (Sharon) Smith, of S. Buffalo Twp., Thomas A. (Rona) Smith, of Winfield Twp., and Chuck (Tara) Smith, of S. Buffalo Twp.; daughter-in-law Judy Smith, of Surfside Beach, SC. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Howard A. "Dusty" Smith, brother Harold E. Smith, sister Twila Settlemyer and infant sister Marilyn.
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday November 8, from 6-8 p.m. in the Redmond Funeral Home, Inc. 524 High St. Freeport. A Funeral service will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, November 9th, in the funeral home with Pastor Carl Johnson officiating. Burial will be private.
