John E. Shuster, 73, of Buffalo Township, passed away quietly at home Friday, Jan. 22, 2021, while surrounded by his family. John was born Aug. 30, 1947, in Natrona Heights, a son of the late H. Lucille (Rusz) and Edwin L. Shuster. John grew up in South Buffalo Township, graduated from Freeport High School in 1965, served in the Army during the Vietnam War and retired from ATI, Brackenridge, in 1998. John enjoyed his time at home. He spent his retirement years doing home projects. He was an expert at creating something useful out of scraps of wood. He enjoyed Kubota RTV rides on trails in the woods that brought nature up close and allowed him to appreciate it. Many days were spent with his family enjoying the outdoor fireplace at his home. John spent time in the winter doing jigsaw puzzles and making frames to display them. He liked the simple things in life: food cooked on the grill, his smoked turkey was delicious, keeping the "farm" property looking nice, reruns of his favorite TV shows and spending quiet time with family. He was a member of the DAV and the VFW. John is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carolyn B (Brabetz) Shuster; two sons, Joel (Anna) Shuster, of Freeport, and Jonathan (Heather) Shuster, of Saylorsburg, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Grace and Peyton. John is also survived by his sister, Nancy Smith; two nephews and their families; and several aunts and cousins. The family would like to give a special "thank you" to the Butler and Pittsburgh VA Healthcare Systems and the Lutheran Senior Life VNA of Western PA for all their personal and compassionate care. Respecting John's wishes, all arrangements are private and have been entrusted to the REDMOND FUNERAL HOME INC. in Freeport. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to City Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 965, New Castle, PA 16103.
