Levi J. Mohney

Levi J. Mohney, 46, of Buffalo Twp., passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. at his home. Levi was born in New Kensington, PA on May 28, 1977, a son of Tim R. and Mary M. (McAninch) Mohney, of Mars, PA. Levi was a 1995 graduate of Freeport Area High School. Levi was a talented hockey player. He and his family spent many years traveling to hockey games and tournaments in the United States and Canada. On May 21, 1995, Levi was injured in a hockey game just outside of Toledo, OH. Levi sustained a sever spinal cord injury and has been a quadriplegic since that terrible day. Levi did not let his disability stop his love of hockey and he began to coach. He coached Freeport Hockey, Pittsburgh Vipers and for Slippery Rock University. Levi was a member of the White Star Club in Buffalo Twp. He loved music, especially the Grateful Dead. He enjoyed going to music festivals and spending time with his friends and family. In addition to his parents, Levi is survived by his two sisters, Brandy S. and Charlie VanDyke, Jr. of Buffalo Twp.: Misty M. Mohney, of Seven Fields, PA, brother, Noah P.& Joanna Mohney, of Nyack, NY and his companion, Heather Flaherty. He is also survived by maternal grandfather, Vernon McAninch. His nephew, Dylan VanDyke and nieces, Maddie VanDyke and Addison Mohney. Levi was also known as "Pappy Levi" to his companion Heather's grandchildren. Levi is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Harold & Mary Ellen "Sis" (Robinson) Mohney. Maternal grandmother, Dona (Clever) McAninch. Uncles, Joe Mohney, Bill McAninch, Mike McAninch and his beloved black lab, Trips Family and friends will be received on Friday, June 9th from 5-8 pm in the Redmond Funeral Home Inc. 524 High St. in Freeport, PA. At the family's request, a private service will be conducted following the public visitation on Friday evening.
