Mary Hershey Obituary

Mary Louise (Campbell) Hershey, 100, residing at Sugar Creek Quality Life, in Worthington, passed into the hands of our Lord on August 4, 2024 surrounded by family. She took her last breath while her great-grandson, Caleb Clark, was reading Scripture to her. Mary was born June 26, 1924, in Harrison Twp. to the late Ernest and Carrie (Watson) Campbell. After graduation from Freeport High School, she married William Brady Stokes, in Freeport, and they became parents of 3 children. She enjoyed bowling and was an active member in the Order of the Eastern Star and loved get-togethers with family and friends. She became a nurse and worked at New Kensington Hospital, and in a dentist office. After Mary and Bill divorced, she met and married Ernie Hershey while working at the Butler VA Hospital. She loved caring for veterans and talked of them for many years. After retirement, she and Ernie moved to Charleston, SC. where she baked bread, took walks on the beach with Ernie, and enjoyed hosting visits from family. One favorite pastime was reading Scripture and talking about the Lord. Mary always told people she was going to live to be 100, and she did. She enjoyed her surprise party and said, "Well, I made it". Mary is survived by her son, William J. Stokes , and wife, Linda, step-children, Kelvin (Sally) Hershey and Toni Lynn Hershey. Grandchildren, Lisa (David) Clark, Bill (Christine) Clark, Sean (Serena) Clark, Shelly (Ron) Jones, Eric Clark, Jamie (Grant) Walter, Kim (Tim) Leach and Tammy Stokes. Great-grandchildren, Josh, Tony, Amber, Justyne, Joshua, Cody, Kierrie, Colton and Caleb, Bailey, Cameron, William, Shona, Gage, Jrake, Aiden, Mia, Ava, Lincoln, Neva, Jaxon, Kai, Lillian, Leighton, London, Kensley, Caden, Brody, Evelyn, and Caden. Great-great grandchildren, Aria, Waylan, Addison and MacKenzie. Also nieces and nephews that loved spending time with their Aunt Mary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Hershey, in 2003, daughters, Nancy Stokes, age 3 and Connie Pomrenke, in Dec. 2023, brothers, Cyril Campbell and Ernest Campbell, sisters, Margaret "Peg" Block, Mildred "Mid" Rubintino, Gloria Brinker and Irene Staley. Family and friend will be received on Wednesday August 7th from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. in the Redmond Funeral Home, Inc. 524 High St. Freeport.
