Paul Mainhart Obituary

Paul M. Mainhart, 93 of Freeport passed away on Friday, April 11, 2025. He was born on June 3, 1931, in South Buffalo Township to the late Albert O. and Maetta Belle (Alter) Mainhart. On August 3, 1951, he married the love of his life, Ruth Henry Mainhart. They enjoyed many happy years together until her passing in 1999. He was a loving and devoted husband who took care of his wife for the 11 years she battled Alzheimer’s disease. As young as 7 years old, Paul could name every car that passed by his home. He took that love for cars to work at Devereaux Motor Sales, where he started working on October 4, 1948. During his career, he was recognized by the Chevrolet Legion of Leaders for 31 years and the Chevrolet Truck Sales Honor Club for 18 years. Paul took early retirement from Devereaux Motor Sales on April 30, 1994 , to care for his wife Ruth. After Ruth passed away, he returned to Devereaux and worked from 1999-2014 for a total of 61 years in the car business at Devereaux Motor Sales. Paul joined the Freeport Fire Department in June 1954 and was active for many years, earning a lifetime membership. He answered many calls for the ambulance and the fire truck. He was a member of the Freeport United Methodist Church for over 60 years, where he served on the Trustees and on the Administrative Board. Many years ago, Paul was the Republican Committee Man for the voting district in Laneville. Also, he was one of the people involved in helping to organize the transition of Laneville from South Buffalo Township into the Borough of Freeport. Paul enjoyed being with family, watching Pittsburgh Pirate Baseball and Pittsburgh Steeler Football. In 1987, Paul traveled with his wife and daughter to Japan to see his son, Gary, who was stationed in the Navy. He always enjoyed trips to Rehoboth Beach each summer with his family. He also enjoyed vacations to Ocean City, Delaware, Florida and Las Vegas. Paul was very active in the Freeport Senior Citizens and occasionally helped to serve meals to the attendees. Paul is survived by his daughter, Janet (Lanny) Horn, Suffolk, VA, and sons, Robert (Paula) Mainhart, Florence, KY, Daniel (Kay) Mainhart, Saxonburg, and Gary (Pam) Mainhart, Lake Royal, North Carolina. He is survived by 7 grandchildren, Vicki Mainhart, Jessie (Austin) Glover, Matthew Mainhart, Alyssa (Ian) Forte, Erin (Justin) Vick, Zachary (Melanie) Mainhart, and Lindsay (Todd) Mauer. He is also survived by 8 great grandchildren, 3 step great-grandchildren, 2 step great great grandchildren, his sister Ruth (Mainhart) Henry, his friend Calvin Cline, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Ruth (Henry) Mainhart, who passed away August 23, 1999, grandson, Christopher J. Mainhart on August 24, 2003, and twin grandsons, Shawn and Shane Horn, on February 19 and 20 1991, step-grandson, Curby Horn on June 18, 2009, and brothers, Gerald Mainhart, Albert Mainhart, Jr., and his sister, Margaret B. Anderson. Paul will be remembered for the loving way he took care of his wife during her long illness, his love of cars (especially Chevrolet) and his great sense of humor. As per Paul’s wishes, there will be no visitation. We hope that those who loved and knew him will celebrate his life in your own personal way. Memorial contributions can be made to Freeport Senior Citizens or the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department, two organizations that were important to Paul.
