Thomas C. Sweeny, Sr., 81, of Freeport, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Rosebrook in Sarver. Thomas was born February 27, 1945, in Natrona Heights, the son of the late Richard G. and Frances (Yetter) Sweeny. Tom retired in 2002 after 38 dedicated years as an Overhead and Mobile Grove Crane Operator at Allegheny Ludlum Steel, Brackenridge. He was a life member of the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department where he held numerous offices up to Assistant Chief. He enjoyed spending time there with his friends and all 3 of his sons and grandson, Ryan. Tom was also a life member at the Freeport Sportsman’s Club where he had held the office of President and dedicated his time to teaching hunter safety. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed his camp, hunting, fishing, trap shooting, sports, and most importantly time with his family. He was a proud graduate of Freeport High School class of 1963 where he played football throughout his high school career. He later coached many players on the gridiron for the Freeport Bumble Bees youth football program. Tom was a wealth of knowledge on Freeport’s long history and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeport.
Tom is survived by his three sons, Thomas C. (Anne) Sweeny, Jr. of Freeport, Eric L. (Teri) Sweeny of Freeport, and Matthew J. (Missi) Sweeny of Buffalo Township; their mother, Marsha (Hughes) Sweeny, of Natrona Heights; niece Roxanne (Fred) Kleeburg of West Dundee, IL; seven grandchildren, Ryan (Jacqui), Megan (Alec) Varley, Kaiti, Emily, Shane, Hannah, and Eryn; and 2 great grandchildren, Josephine and Sabrina.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Leroy and Richard (Betty) Sweeny.
Friends will be received Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Redmond Funeral Home, Inc., 524 High Street, Freeport, where a funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Truscott officiating.
Private interment will be held in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
