On Friday May 3, 2024, William F. Miller of Sarver, passed away peacefully at West Penn Hospital while surrounded by family at the age of 74 years, after a brief battle with leukemia. He was born on November 12, 1949 in Mount Oliver, PA to Ruth (Weinheimer) and Regis Miller. A graduate of the Franciscan University and Duquesne University, he served the Diocese of Pittsburgh for 33 years as a Catholic school principal, after which he worked for Blackburn’s Pharmacy for over 10 years. He had a deep faith in God and was an active parishioner of Saint Mary’s Mother of God in Freeport where he volunteered at bingo and was a member of the men’s group.
Bill loved meeting new people and reconnecting with friends, showing genuine curiosity towards everyone who crossed his path. With high-powered energy and a zest for life, Bill didn’t just learn your name; he learned your story. He was known as the “Mayor of Woodbury” and organized many neighborhood events like the block party, bonfires, Easter egg hunts, Fun Night and Friday Night Football under the lights. Bill had a number of hobbies, most notably a passion for sports, as a player in his younger days, a coach for Freeport Area Little League and Softball, and as an avid Pittsburgh fan. He enjoyed nature and going to camp, playing cards and games, but most of all spending time with the people he loved.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Cathy; children: Luke (Lisa), Caitlyn Fife (Tommy), Jon (Miranda), Bill (Olivia), and Zak; grandchildren: Ciara, Ava, Abraham, Catherine Joy (“CJ”), Augustine, Thomas, Ellery, and Eleni; his sister Cindy Smith; sister-in-law Theresa Jordan; brothers-in-law Bill Anderson, Greg (Roxanne), Dave, and Chuck (Sandy) Jordan; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Bernie Anderson.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, May 8th and Thursday, May 9th from 2-4 & 6-8 PM in the Redmond Funeral Home, Inc. 524 High St. Freeport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Friday, May 10th in St. Mary, Mother of God Church, Freeport with Reverend Richard J. Kosisko, JCL officiating.
