R. Eileen Smith, 75, of Lower Burrell, left to be with her Lord on Dec. 8, 2011. at Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia in Cabot. She lived and was involved in many activities at Concordia over the past few years. She was born on October 25, 1936 to the late William J. and Roberta V. (Snyder) Smith. Eileen was a lifetime resident of Lower Burrell. She graduated from Ken High class of 1954 and was active in helping to plan the special reunion of "Ken Hi 2000" , an all-school reunion celebration. In 1993 she retired from the Burrell School District after 36 years of teaching 5th grade science. She also was the secretary at the Stewart Junior High for 4 years. She attended Burrell as a student for 9 years. Eileen has been loyal to Burrell for 50 years. She was a member of the New Kensington United Presbyterian Church.

She graduated form Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a bachelors degree in Elementary Education and a masters degree in Elementary Science. Fifth grade students remember the Presidential Competitions and the Hot Chocolate she provided in her room on those cold winter mornings. She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association of Retirees, National Education Association of Retirees, and the Der Sitzmark Ski Club.

Eileen enjoyed photography, coin collecting, bowling, table tennis, flea markets, shopping, boating, flower gardening, and household tinkering. Traveling in the RV always created fun times. However, her greatest love was biking and skiing combined with travel to Holland and Innsbruck, Austria with the Der Sitzmark Ski Club. She also assisted with a research program on the "Feeding Habits of the Humpback Whale" out of Glouster, Massachusetts. She delivered Meals on Wheels to the Upper Burrell and New Kensington area.

Eileen loved and looked forward to family reunions which she organized and called it "Dozens of Cousins". Annual books with family news of each year were created for each family to enjoy. After her retirement she would organized a monthly breakfast for all Burrell School District former employees which was coordinated with an Annual Newsletter and an Annual Picnic.

Eileen is survived by two brothers; William "Bill" and Betsy Smith of Punta Gorda, FL and Robert John "Jack" and Audrey Smith of Saxonburg. Her niece, Joy Muder of Florida and 2 nephews, Craig and Christina Smith of Florida and Shawn and Christine Smith of Plum. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a nephew, Scott Smith.

Many holidays and vacations were spent with her 2nd family- James and Kathy Blair of Freeport and their children; Chris and Amy Blair, Bart and Cindy Blair, Yvette Blair and Jim Beck. Also all of the Blair grandchildren who lovingly called her "Gram 2, Lady Leen, and Granny Smith". The Blair's considered her a member of the Blair family and enjoyed many good times together.

Family and friends are being received on Saturday Dec. 10th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Sunday Dec. 11 from noon until services the time of the service in the Redmond Funeral Home, Inc. 524 High St. Freeport. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 2 p.m. on Sunday with the Rev. Colin Yuckman officiating. Burial will be held on Monday morning in Greenwood Memorial Park , Lower Burrell.
