Charles Norman Serene, Sr. 70 of Freeport passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday May 20, 2010. Charlie was born on June 1, 1947, a son of the late Dorothy Marie (Fry) and Leroy "Fuzzy" Serene. After graduating from Kittanning High School in 1966, he served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict. He retired from Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. in 1998, after working for 31 years. He and his wife, Peggy were known as "Team Serene" and served together as PA Special Fire Police officers, being members of the Freeport VFW, Armstrong Co. Fire Police and the Harrison Twp. Fire Police Assoc. Prior to that, he served faithfully for 39 years as a fire fighter and was a "Golden Eagle" member of the the Ford City F.O.E. He was proud of his Native American heritage and was a member of the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Heritage Center in Dorseyville and was named "Fire Wolf". He enjoyed participating in Pow Wows over the years. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on cars and watching the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. Charlie is survived by his wife of 13 years, Margaret Ann "Peggy" (Coffman) Serene. His son and daughter in law, Charles Norman & Trish Serene, Jr. of Freeport. His step daughters; Deborah Marie Samay of Shaler and Rebecca Louise Samay of Pittsburgh. His step son, Paul James & Lisa Zielinski II of New Kensington. His 11 step grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren. He is also survived by his Brother in law and Sister in law, Robert & Dennie Coffman of Lower Burrell and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Mary Louise (Coffman) Serene, brother Marlin Dewayne Serene and his sister, Mary Virginia (Serene) Waitkins. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday May 22nd from 6-8 pm in the Redmond Funeral Home Inc., 524 High St. in Freeport. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday May 23rd at 1:00 pm with Ron Grayfeather officiating. Private family buiral will be held at Lawn Haven Burial Estates in Worthington.
